The global media company released the Forbes 400 of 2021, which includes several familiar faces to Connecticut residents highlighted by hedge fund mastermind Ray Dalio.
Each year, Forbes runs the numbers to determine the wealthiest residents in each of the 50 states, including more than 750 candidates who were whittled down to the top 400 wealthiest Americans.
According to Forbes, their reporters interviewed employees, handlers, peers, rivals, and attorneys while poring over thousands of SEC documents, court records, and news articles to determine the ranking.
With a net worth of approximately $22 billion, Greenwich resident Ray Dalio was ranked as Connecticut’s most wealthy resident, coming in at 36th on the Forbes 400 list.
The 72-year-old founder and co-chief investment officer at Bridgewater Associates, Dalio manages more than $150 billion in funds after earning an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Forbes noted that Dalio has given approximately $1 billion to philanthropic causes, and his Dalio Foundation has supported microfinance and inner-city education.
New York Mets owner Steve Cohen, who also calls Greenwich home, was ranked number 48 on the Forbes 400 list with an estimated net worth of $17.4 billion.
The 65-year-old Cohen, who oversees Point72 Asset Management, formerly ran SAC Capital, one of the most successful hedge funds ever, according to Forbes, though he was forced to shut that business down after the firm pleaded guilty to insider trading charges that cost him nearly $2 billion.
With a net worth of $5.8 billion, businesswoman Karen Pritzker came in at number 188 on Forbes’ list.
Pritzker, age 64, a resident of Branford in New Haven County, is one of 11 billionaire Pritzker heirs after her grandfather A.N. Pritzker built the industrial conglomerate Marmon and Hyatt hotels.
Rounding out the five Connecticut residents are billionaire Greenwich resident Stephen Mandel, Jr., age 66 (No. 289 on the Forbes 400 list with a net worth just shy of $4 billion), the operator of the Lone Pine Capital hedge fund firm, and 65-year-old Brad Jacobs (300 on the list with a $3.2 billion net worth), whose fortune comes from XPO Logistics, a commercial trucking company.
